More Good News in the World

GE has finally committed to dredging PCBs from the Hudson River– Well, sort of committed: they’ve only officially agreed to Phase 1 of the cleanup, and still have room to drag their heels on Phase 2. But nonetheless– this is huge. I remember this issue from back in high school, and I know it goes back further than that. GE used to run these treacly TV ads from its so-called “astroturf” groups [fake grass-roots movement created via GE backing], featuring people waxing poetic about how beautiful the Hudson was– far too beautiful to dishevel the riverbed by bothering about a few measly toxic chemicals… Quite a nasty campaign, with lots of pseudo-science. Anyway, it’s wonderful to hear that there’s been some actual progress.
