The Definition of Naughty [Rhyme] Schemes

May 8, 2005

Ooh, an even better BoingBoing link– “The Omnificent English Dictionary in Limerick Form is a project to write a definitional limerick for every single word in the Oxford English Dictionary.”

Artery
The arteries carry the blood;
Without them our bodies would flood.
They’re elasticized — sorta;
The chief’s the aorta.
If it ruptures, that’s all for you, Bud!

Naturally, I couldn’t resist looking up whether meta-themed entries existed yet. No limerick definition (limerition?) yet for “dictionary”, but “limerick” has been covered:

Limerick
The limerick’s not anapestic,
However it is quite elastic;
The subject it covers
Is frequently lovers’
Activities, normal and drastic.

Anyone got any (not too dirty) favorites to share?

Now This Is What I Call Meta Analysis

C/o BoingBoing [not to be confused with this site]: a Self-referential aptitude test in which all the questions (well, almost all) are only about the other questions, essentially making it one big logic game. Looks like it would be kinda fun– if I were studying for the LSAT and not about to go to sleep.

A taste:

1. The first question whose answer is B is question: (A) 1 (B) 2 (C) 3 (D) 4 (E) 5

17. The answer to question 6 is: (A) C (B) D (C) E (D) none of the above (E) all of the above

19. The answer to this question is: (A) A (B) B (C) C (D) D (E) E

“I Can’t Believe It’s Not Photo-shopped!”

For today’s moment of zen, I point you to a Wildflower blog, devoted to daily picture-updates of various scenic sites in California.

There’s one photo in particular from this site in which the juxtaposition of colors (from orange/yellow daisies to deep blue phacelias and bright shoot-green hillside) is so striking that the photo’s authenticity had to be checked out by an urban-legend website. Really. See for yourself.
